A delegation from the Oireachtas Committee on Tourism and Culture will take part in a field visit to Sligo’s contemporary arts centre, The Model, on Monday, 19th July 2010.

The Model’s premises re-opened in May of this year following an extensive redevelopment programme. The refurbished arts centre includes a purpose-built theatre and cinema space; new galleries; nine studio spaces, and a new restaurant. Following the redevelopment, The Model aims to become Ireland’s leading centre for the contemporary arts. It also hopes to enhance the tourism potential of the north-west region overall.

During Monday’s study tour, members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Sport, Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs will take part in a tour of The Model’s exhibition space and will have an opportunity to preview elements of its upcoming summer exhibition, entitled ‘The Living Ginger: The Characters of Jack B. Yeats’. This exhibition – which will open on 24th July – will run alongside a showcase of Duncan Campbell’s film, ‘Make It New John’, which tells the story of the DeLorean car; its creator John DeLorean, and the workers of the Belfast-based car plant who built it.

A working lunch will be attended by Sligo’s County Manager, Hubert Kearns. It is expected that much of the discussion will focus on the role of the arts in offering sustainable development potential for Sligo and the wider north-west region.

Monday’s programme will conclude with a visit to Sligo’s Trades Club, which is currently being revived as part of The Model’s off-site work. Under this project, members from the local community are involved in mapping out future uses and activities for the former Trades Club, which closed in 2007 after 100 years.

Members of the media wishing to accompany the Oireachtas Committee to The Model can avail of organised transport to and from Dublin City Centre. Departure for Sligo will be at 9.30am and arrival back to Dublin will be at 6pm approximately.

Setting the context for the meeting, he outlined a brief history of the campaign to date - In January 2009 Theatre Forum had decided the best way to protect arts funding was to act more strategically, think longer term and to create a base in every constituency which would seek to inform and influence political representatives on all sides and at all levels - Councillors, Senators, TD's - re the true value of the arts. The sector had to fill the political gap left by the inability of the Arts Council to communicate or fight its corner. The first meeting with local representatives took place in Wexford at the time of the TF Conference in June. The subsequent publication of the McCarthy report in July, and its threat to cut Arts Council funding and to eliminate the Film Board, Culture Ireland and even the Department led to a national mobilisation across the arts sectors. A campaign was mounted which managed to maintain a constructive and positive tone, which highlighted the value of the arts and the role they could play in any recovery of our economy and identity and which managed to avoid being viewed as just a campaign by another sectional interest group - all of which had engaged the political decision makers. However, Fergal reminded everyone that 2010 was the first of three harsh budgets - we might not have the equivalent of the 'bounce' that was provided by Farmleigh and so we had to prepare to fight another day to prevent senseless and damaging cuts adding to the woes arising from the Arts Council's cuts earlier this year. To focus the campaign and to make lobbying easier, it was proposed that this year we would again have a number of key 'demands' or asks including that the arts not be cut again next year, the creation of a dedicated cultural tourism fund (detail to be yet thought out) for arts and culture projects, the protection of local authority arts budgets and a number of local issues relevant to respective constituencies.

THERE IS a bandwagon rolling through the country at the moment and there’s a danger it could break down under the weight of the number of people jumping on it. It was set in motion at the Global Economic Forum in Farmleigh last September when one particular idea very much came to the fore – the key role of the arts in our economic regeneration....

A big thank you to all who attended the National Day of Action workshops/briefing sessions the week before last - There was a lot of great discussion and input from people, and if that energy and passion continues to build then we should have a very successful and exciting day on 17 September. Details of the workshops were on-line and in some local newspapers (see links below) but those of you who missed the sessions or didn´t know they were on, keep checking the NCFA blog or join the facebook page now (and your constituency Facebook page) so that you can receive regular updates.

A summary of the what was discussed, debated and deemed most important in relation to the up-and-coming NDoA will be posted online in the next couple of days so do click back to get an update.

The National Campaign for the Arts
Is organising a series of free workshops and briefing sessions on
the National Day of Action (NDoA) which is due to take place on Friday 17 September 2010.

As arts workers it's important that you take part in this so come along to the workshops and see what you can do to participate.

	EACH SESSION INCLUDES:

Information, presentations, group discussions, networking with fellow arts workers & advocates

WHY YOU NEED TO ATTEND:

Following the 2010 budget announcement last year the Arts Council received a €9 million reduction in funding from the Government.
More than 300 organisations subsequently had their grant cut, some by up to 65%. A further 30 had their funding cut all together.
The Taoiseach has indicated that further cuts are coming and Minister Hanafin has publicly acknowledged cuts will be happening in her department.

So we have to work together now to protect the arts, our jobs and our country’s future. The National Day of Action on Friday 17 September 2010 is our chance to do exactly that.
