Time is ticking away with the Budget coming up on December 9. There are many ways you can support the National Campaign for the Arts including meeting your local politicians and joining your local arts worker group but one of the quickest and easiest things you can do is to sign the petition.

We need 10,000 signatures by Friday 27 November and we will then deliver them to Minister Martin Cullen.
We're not there yet - can you help us spread the word?

Here are a few ideas:

1) Post the petion to your Facebook/ Twitter
2) Include in an e-newsletter or put up a link on your website
3) Print out a paper copy of the petition (see below) and display in your office/ foyer/ venue etc (these can then be inputted online afterwards)
http://www.ncfa.ie/ee/images/uploads/Paper version of petition.pdf
4) If you are an artist or arts organisation contact your suppliers to tell them about the petition - insurers, designers, printers, IT consultants, stationery suppliers, couriers etc - these will all be affected by cuts in the arts and will be interested to hear about the Campaign and the petition. You can download a sample letter here which you can use when contacting them or create your own.

If you've any further ideas just let us know and we will post.

Drama, Music and Art are how to interpret and balance our perceptions of what is happening to us and how we might respond. Like a lost child they will survive, but at what cost. Do not push the Arts away from the centre of who we are and how we see ourselves.

Posted by Colm Hefferon on 12/11 at 01:12 PM

We need to keep the arts dynamic and prolific! The arts are a huge part of community strenght and pride, and the cofindence ensueing from this is where our recovery lies

Support the arts. Creative expression is vital

Posted by Ruth Daly on 16/11 at 12:45 PM

Artistic expression is at the very centre of our humanity. Art reflects and comments on our lives and circumstances, lightens our spirits, holds up a mirror, makes us think, smile, weep.., but artist have always struggled for their livelihood. Don’t take away the little we have!

The arts are wonderful value for money and is one sector that is most certainly not broken. Garry Hynes recent article in the Irish times illustrates this point to perfection. three shows in three time zones playing to ecstatic reviews from a company whose annual grant is Euro915,000. Ireland needs the selfesteem that the arts engender.

The arts need cuts to be important again.  It became about who wrote the best grant application, not the best play or book.  Cut the arts, real artists will survive, only the mediocre will vanish.

A country is nothing without its cultural identity.  Cutting funds serves no purpose.

Art is the expression of the thoughts from our soul! With out art our world is dead…

Posted by J. halsey on 19/11 at 01:12 AM

The Arts is a huge part of Irish culture!

It is seen as “Arty Farty” and posh but its not! The arts brings people from al walks of life together. Workshops help kids to come out of their shells and express what they are feeling. It gives them a place they can be safe and not be judged by teachers or parents or school kids that like to pick on them.

It can be used to help physically and mentally disabled people and make them feel less outcast!
It is a highly underrated medium! and not only do we need to make the government know, we also need to make the general public know… With out the public support we will struggle!

Not supporting the arts is killing the heart of the country.

Posted by Orla Clancy on 19/11 at 01:01 PM

I think the goal set for petition signatures was modest. 15 to 20000 would be more realistic with good promotion.
The Arts sector have served Ireland well. If it is not broken do not fix it. Improve it if you can. A 10% reduction in Arts Council Funding to the Arts would put thousands of jobs in the sector on the brink of extinction.

“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.”

Posted by M. Healy on 22/11 at 08:02 PM

The arts encompasses some of Irelands most known works, without which the identity of this country would be completely different.
To stop supporting the arts would be akin to stifling the voice of the country, and removing the medium through which Irish culture and values are expressed and explored to their fullest.

Posted by Joe Betts on 22/11 at 09:53 PM

Lets not forget that Arts has presented Ireland on the world stage in more positive ways than any other ... and that this has been supported through tax incentives, local council support, semi state bodies, corporate donations and an encouraging environment - lets keep the support going for our hard working and talented artists and the many jobs they support.

Posted by M on 24/11 at 07:11 AM

The Arts are needed now more than ever. To set us apart from this awful time, to lift the spirits of people and show that imagination is stronger than reality. To cut the funding for the Arts would be like cutting out the Heart of the Country. We want to cut out the cancer not the Heart.

Posted by Marion Reynolds on 24/11 at 10:44 AM

we need to preserve what little identity we have left as irish men and women

Posted by Eugene McCabe on 24/11 at 09:35 PM

I expect we will have some cuts in Arts Council Buget but we managed in the past and with a little effort and imagination can prosper. Do I detect a little negative thinking out there. Hope not. Be positive whatever. Imaginative fundraising events will get public support and can help make up shortfalls in funding.

The Western Development Commission (Creative West 2009) reports that there are 11,000 people employed in the creative industries in the western region and this sector is identified as having the most potential to retain existing jobs and create new employment opportunities. This research confirms Sligo’s importance as a vibrant cultural and creative centre in the Western Region, which generates high quality employment (4.2% share of total employment in Sligo), stimulates innovation in other sectors, plays an important social role and can stimulate regional development on a long term sustainable basis.
