In reality, the only good news here for the arts is a potential expansion of arts-based CE schemes, something that was likely to occur anyway as we enter a recessionary period of growing unemployment.
Can I ask if the Greens were lobbied in any way by the NCFA in advance of this PFG? If so, what was their response?
And at this point in time, perhaps a campaign targetting government TD constituency clinics is now in order? Sitting TDs nervous of retaining their seats will take note if a steady stream of people come through their clinic doors demanding ringfenced funding for the arts.
Likewise, a programme of lobbying the opposition, who are likely to be in government sooner rather than later, wouldn’t go amiss. Some ears are more open than others, and the Oireachtas committee is a good place to start.

We are encouraging all members of the Campaign to lobby their local politicians via the Arts Worker groups in each constituency (over 4,000 people are now registered) and also individually.
Inevitably some of these groups are more active than others with the most active being Dublin Central, Dublin South Central and Dublin South East. There has been some strong interest from politicians to date and it’s really important that this continues.

I believe a policy of targetting second FF TDs could be useful. These people are extremely nervous about their prospects in the event of a snap election.
In Dublin South Central, that would be Michael Mulcahy. The other two constituencies have one FF TD each.
But most in the country have two, and at least one is likely currently quite fearful about their prospects and unusually attentive to the concerns of their electorate.
A concerted effort to bring the NCFA message to them could bear fruit. With income tax and much of social welfare and education already ringfenced in the Autumn budget, it’s going to be very difficult to avoid swingeing cuts in many other sectors, especially the arts, in the current economic climate.
But if sufficient numbers of backbenchers brought concerns to the cabinet, as they did in advance of the renegotiated PFG in relation to hare coursing, they’ll get their way, as the executive cannot afford to risk eroding their majority further.
