ELECTION 2011

On Friday 25 February Ireland will go to the polls. We need to ensure that the new government understands and responds to our needs and continues to invest in the arts. Last year we successfully raised the profile of the arts as a sector and communicated the value of the arts – to the Exchequer, to Ireland’s reputation and most importantly to our society.

However, with the imminent change of government, there are no guarantees for the arts. We need to lobby to ensure that funding and support for the arts is continued at a sustainable level and that investment in the arts is prioritised. We also need to campaign for the arts portfolio to be held by a full Cabinet Minister and to be a substantive part of any new department. We must make a voice for the arts heard during the election campaign.

There are a number of tools and ways you can add your voice to the campaign:

1. ATTEND THE HUSTINGS

We are holding hustings in Cork, Dublin and Galway on Monday 14 February. In Dublin the arts spokespersons from all 5 political parties will attend a meeting to outline their respective arts policies and answer your questions. There will be similar meetings in Cork and Galway with candidates invited to present their local arts policy and answer your questions. Come along and make the arts an election issue!

Cork: 10.45am - 12.00 Crawford Art Gallery
Dublin: 10.45am - 12.00 Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar
Galway: 10.45am - Radisson Blu Hotel
Limerick: 10.45am - Belltable Arts Centre

2. CHALLENGE AND ADVISE

Let the canvassers know that the arts are an election issue for you. Ask them about their arts policy and tell them about the value of the arts. We’ve prepared some questions and messages you might like to use (.doc files).
